What is Chaga? Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a parasitic fungus that thrives on birch trees in cold climates, forming a distinctive black, charcoal-like conk. Revered for centuries in traditional medicine across Russia, Siberia, Eastern Europe, and by Indigenous peoples of North America, chaga has been used to support overall health and vitality.
It has been treasured as a powerful adaptogen and immune ally. Traditionally brewed into teas or decoctions, this humble-looking fungus offers a range of potential wellness benefits:
Immune SupportChaga is rich in beta-glucans, a type of polysaccharide that may help support and modulate the immune system, encouraging balance rather than overstimulation.
Antioxidant Powerhouse: One of the highest natural sources of antioxidants, chaga contains compounds like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and melanin, helping to neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress—important for cellular health and healthy aging.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Traditionally used to soothe inflammation, chaga’s betulinic acid (derived from the birch tree) may have natural anti-inflammatory actions, supporting overall well-being.
Gut & Digestive Support: A warm infusion of chaga tea is believed to have a gentle, supportive effect on the digestive system, making it a nourishing choice for daily sipping or seasonal resets.
Energy & Endurance: Unlike caffeine, chaga doesn’t act as a stimulant, but many users report steadier energy, focus, and stamina when consumed regularly—an adaptogenic quality prized in herbal traditions.
A Handful of Ways to Sip, Brew, and Blend Chaga:
Brew a Nourishing Tea: Simmer Method: Add 1–3 chunks (15–20g) to 1 liter of water. Simmer on low heat for at least 1 hour. For a richer brew, extend simmering up to 4–6 hours or overnight in a slow cooker. Reuse: Chaga chunks can be reused multiple times. Continue brewing until the tea no longer achieves a dark color. I personally re-brew three times. I love mine mixed with cold or hot coffee (75% coffee + 25% chaga ratio)
Grind into Powder: Use a high-powered blender or coffee grinder to pulverize dried chaga chunks into a fine powder. This powder can be used for quicker tea preparation or incorporated into coffee, smoothies and other recipes.
Create a Potent Tincture: For a dual-extraction tincture, soak ground chaga in high-proof alcohol (e.g., 190-proof ethanol) for several weeks. Follow this with a hot water extraction. Combining both extracts yields a tincture rich in both water-soluble and alcohol-soluble compounds .
Note: Consult with a healthcare professional before adding chaga to your wellness routine, especially if you have existing health conditions or are on medication.
